What actually makes a good AI agent?

Not just a working one. A *good* one.

I started where most people do — structured context (md files, system prompts) that gives an agent its identity and purpose, combined with a model's reasoning capability. Add tooling and you have something that can act on the world.

I've been building a system around those three layers — Identity, Cognition, and Action — and it's starting to feel solid.

But lately my thinking has shifted.

Because once you have agents that work, new questions emerge:

→ How do you manage memory and state across runs? → How do you know when an agent is drifting from its purpose? → How do you maintain visibility into what it's actually doing? → And maybe most practically — how do you avoid agent bloat as your ecosystem grows?

That last one is where my head is right now. It's easy to keep adding agents. Much harder to know when to consolidate, retire, or redesign one.

I don't have the answers yet. But I think the lifecycle question is just as important as the build question.

Curious whether others are thinking about this — how are you managing the lifecycle of your agents?
