SPL has always been Splunk's superpower. The way you wield it just changed.

SPL has always been Splunk's superpower. The way you wield it just changed.

For years, getting value out of Splunk meant getting fluent in SPL — chaining commands through the pipe, leaning on stats, eval and rex to turn messy machine data into answers. That skill still matters. But the interface to it is being rewritten.

The new Splunk MCP Server (Model Context Protocol) lets an AI agent talk to Splunk in natural language. It explores your data, taps saved searches and lookups, and uses Splunk's AI Assistant to generate, optimise and explain the SPL for you — all inside Splunk's own authentication and role-based access, so the agent only ever sees what you're cleared to see.

Now layer that over the Cisco Data Fabric: machine data federated across edge, cloud and hybrid — Iceberg, Delta Lake, Snowflake, Azure — analysed where it lives instead of dragged into one place. Suddenly you can ask, in plain English, "where are we seeing anomalous auth failures this week?" or "which product lines are trending against last quarter?" and an agent answers across the whole fabric, securely.

That's the real shift: from memorising SPL syntax to asking sharper questions. The fundamentals don't disappear — an agent is only as good as the query behind it — but the modern path is agentic, natural-language, and federated.

Security threats and business insight, from the same conversation. That's the agentic AI era arriving in observability.
